I was very impressed with the film on Channel 4 tonight. Apart from the techniques you used, the family's own archive footage was invaluable in helping the mother in particular gain insight.
In the late 80's I was working as a social worker on a maternity unit and often wished I could film the parents and show them what was happening as much to demonstrate what was working as well as what was counter productive. Later I did the Mellow Parenting course which filmed parents for just that purpose, As a social worker I prefer to work with the parents to help them recognise the child's needs rather than directly with the child as I believe that upsets family dynamics.
It was particularly gratifying to see the effectiveness of your approach without any need for you even to meet the child. A phone call each night in the first stages after that first meeting tailing off to monthly seemed ideal.
Is the Cutting Edgefilm available for purchase? I regret not having thought to tape the programme and believe it to be a ground breaking piece of work. The whole family have my admiration for what they shared with their audience.
I hope their new found friendships continue to grow. altogether a lovely piece of work.
